LEN function in Excel

The LEN function in excel counts number of characters, letters, numbers and all spaces, in a given text string. For example, the length of a text string such as “Shift” is “5”, which is counted through the LEN function.

Example

In the above example, the length of each text string is given in 3rd column, named as Result.

Syntax

=LEN(text)

where, (text) is the text string whose length will be counted.

Important Notes

1– The number formatting is not included in the function e.g. the length of  “600” formatted as “$600.00” is still counted as “3”.

2– The space between characters is also counted e.g. the length of “600 43” will be “6”.

Count of all characters in several cells

To count all characters of several cells, use the SUM function along with the LEN function.
